The Story of a Jeweler: Marissa Christian from Wink Jewellery

My name is Marissa Christian, and I’m the designer behind Wink Jewellery. I started Wink Jewellery in 2011 whilst on maternity leave with my daughter, Lucia. I’ve always been a creative person, and loved making jewellery, but working as a Chartered Accountant left me exhausted at the end of each day, so it wasn’t something I ever had the energy to pursue. Having a baby was life changing, to say the least. I saw my life in a whole new way – it was too short to waste doing a job that I wasn’t passionate about. I decided then that I wanted to own my own business, so I could do something I loved, while being able to stay home with my daughter.

My favourite materials are pearls – however I found that they are often seen as old fashioned and conservative by many younger people. I experimented by combining pearls with a wide range of materials to make exciting and modern pieces that would appeal to a younger age group.

This led to my signature range of modern Friendship Bracelets, in which I use bold coloured glass seed beads with pearls and other semi-precious stones, to make delicate layering bracelets that can be worn by women of all ages. Each bracelet has a unique and special meaning (loyalty, honesty, courage, trust, generosity and strength), which friends can choose for each other, or for themselves. The bracelets come beautifully packaged in a re-usable tin box, with a special inspirational quote.

I get my inspiration from everywhere – but particularly architecture and interior design. I have always been fascinated by architecture and interior design – I love looking at minimalist architecture on design blogs, and reading house design magazines. Many of the colour combinations I use in my pieces are inspired by interior designs that I have loved.

Wink Jewellery is extremely versatile – the bracelets are designed so that they look simple and chic worn on their own, but also look fabulous when layered with other bracelets from the collection.

I continue to make some chunkier stone pieces, as well as other layering bracelets, stretch bracelets, earrings and bridal jewellery.
