The Story of a Jeweler: Ana Ostrom

Growing up as a child of the world both genetically and geographically I find it hard to define exactly where my inspiration comes from, having a Spanish father and a Swedish mother and growing up first in New York, Key West and Stockholm as a child travelling has followed me through life in to adulthood with living in Bangkok, London and Ibiza I think my influences are deeply rooted in my love of meeting new people and understanding different cultures and that obviously includes admiring their art, buildings and music. It sounds like a cliche but it is the truth when I say I always knew I had to be something creative, first it was photography that developed in to film editing but It was just a matter of time until I found that working with metal fascinated me, it is a great feeling to realize an idea into something 3 dimensional and then see someone wearing it! It is only then the whole lovely process has landed and I feel ultimate satisfaction.

I feel very lucky because so far I am bursting with ideas and I have to stop myself to not jump on a new project before the last one is developed but at the moment I have two finished collections, my first one being “Urban Jungle” where the geometric shapes frames my love for leopard print and the contrasts between silver and soft fur. The second one is a more luxury line playing on the British Punk culture giving the stud elegance and the pearl new life. Fine draping gold chain, black pearls and punk studs stems from my love of the unexpected. Read More »

The Story of a Jeweler: Kate Ellen

Kate Ellen is the 30 year-old self-taught goldsmith behind Kate Ellen Metals, named the San Francisco Best Jewelry Designer 2010 by 7×7 Magazine. Kate Ellen studied social work and public health and worked for years as an educator and case-manager, and was surprised to find her creative calling while taking a basic metalsmithing class; on the very first day she discovered that her hands just seemed to know what to do.

“I always felt like there was this creative part of me that hadn’t yet turned on. I spent lots of time daydreaming about being a singer, a painter, a dancer, but none of those things really came very natural to me. When I found jewelry design, I was instantly in a groove. I’m comfortable using tools, I enjoy the excitement and danger involved with wielding torches and hammers, and I found that once I got started, my hands couldn’t keep up with all the ideas I wanted to try out.” Read More »

One of a Kind Druzy Pieces from Haley Lebeuf Jewelry

My fascination with jewelry started when I was a child. I was always tinkering with beads and other simple techniques. I became a jeweler in 2007, when I started taking formal jewelery classes. I have worked in the fine jewelry industry for several years, learning all aspects of the jewelry business. In 2011, I started my own line featuring one of a kind druzy pieces.

My style is a bit eclectic. I draw inspiration from many places, however my biggest source is fashion. I am drawn items that reflect light. You can see this in the many druzy stones I choose for my one of a kind pieces. Light plays a huge role in the stones and chains I select as well as how I create my jewelry. I aim to create pieces that are clean and timeless without losing their creative edge. Read More »

The Story of a Jeweler: Jennifer Lawler Designs

I love to create jewelry that is fun and unique but still very wearable. I have always had a passion for creating pieces as far back as the age of 10 or 11. I studied craft design with an emphasis in jewelry at Drake University, The University of Iowa, and Iowa State. After graduation I was able to work for a contemporary goldsmith for over 12 years learning about gemstones and perfecting my technical skills.

I love to work with sterling silver along with yellow and white gold. I also love to use gemstones in my pieces accented by different textures and finishes. I am always inspired while creating my pieces, forming the metals and what might work well with the certain gemstone I am working with. I am also inspired by the architecture all around me, bringing in angles and shapes that are very contemporary. Read More »
